“Nihon Jaia” – Japan International Festival
Basque Country welcomes Japanese Culture
The Nihon Jaia – Japan International Festival will be held next 13th and 14th November 2010 in the new building “Bilbao Arena” Sports Pavilion, in Miribilla (Bilbao). The festival aim is to become a reference to all the people interested in Japanese culture.
This is the second time that Euskadi welcomes Japanese culture and is a response to the success of the first cultural encounter between Japan and Basque country hold on April last year. The organizers wish to continue this kind of cultural encounters in the future trying to reinforce the mutual knowledge of Basque country and Japan, covering the plural and multifaceted expressions of both territories. The hope is to become a reference point for all those interested in Japanese culture in Europe.
The activities will begin on 12th November 2010 with a meeting, organized in collaboration with The Society for the Promotion of Industry (SPRI), that will try to bring closer Japanese and Basque business and commercial entrepreneurs with an exchange of knowledge about Japanese economy and its opportunities.
“Nihon Jaia” – Japan International Festival Program of Activities
With respect to the program activities, two main directions moved the organizers. First, bring to the visitants the opportunity to enter in the multilayered facets of Japanese culture seriously. And, second, show the plural manifestations of Japanese culture considering as much as possible all kind of different expressions of its cultural identity. For that reason, the Festival structure can be ordered in 5 main thematic areas:
-
Japanese traditional arts: that will cover Shodō, Ikebana, Bonsai exposition, tea ceremony, Kimono…
-
Theatre and Scenic arts: Kamishibai, Koto and Taiko concerts, Butoh dance or Noh theatre…
-
Martial Arts: the visitant will have the opportunity to enjoy kendō, kyudō, karate, Iaidō, etc, demonstrations taught and conducted by the best masters of each discipline.
-
Gastronomy: The communication between Japan and Basque Country is special when we talk about gastronomy. For that reason, the festival will be honoured with the presence of Tetsuo Takenaka, one of the best chefs representing Kyoto traditional school, and Basque chefs as Aitor Elizegi, Aitor Basabe or Ricardo Pérez. On 2009, these chefs visited Japan, following the initiative of the Bilbao City Council and Slow Food, for sharing gastronomical experiences with the most important Japanese chefs.
-
Japanese pop-culture: During the festival, Japanese pop-culture will have its own territory and the visitant interested will have the opportunity to see some of the modern and popular culture tendencies: manga, anime, Lolita fashion, videogames, cosplay…
Apart from these sections, the festival will held other parallel activities and two surprise activities, one for the opening ceremony and other for the farewell ceremony.
These are few but powerful reasons for visiting Basque country this autumn to enjoy the beauty and attractive of Japanese cultural patrimony in the heart of Bilbao.
