We live in a world of figures. Systems of weights and measures, rooted in society, are thus also political tools, and 'metrological sovereignty' has been instrumental in the emergence and development of states.
Very few among many existant works on historical metrology have focused on Southeast Asia.

The present book, proceeding from an encyclopedia-minded project, views metrological systems from an encompassing social anthropological perspective, yet takes advantage of a multidisciplinary approach:
An international set of over forty experts-anthropologists, historians, archaeologists, sociologists, linguists-uncovers a whole, ill-known facet of the social and economic history of Southeast Asia, in its broadest sense, that is, including its cultural margins: the Himalaya, New Guinea, and Madagascar.
